SAIFM’s 3rd Regulatory Summit, held on 22 September 2016 at Hyatt Regency was yet again a resounding success commencing with our keynote speaker, futurologist Mr Clem Sunter. Clem, highly sought-after and well-known for his books The Mind of a Fox and Flagwatching, awed the audience with his years’ experience in scenario planning and his enlightening disposition on the challenges South Africa could face in the future.
With an increasing number of new regulatory developments introduced each year the Summit provided invaluable information to regulators, practitioners and investors alike as well as giving insight and perspective on the regulatory reform of the OTC derivatives market; various risks including global risk, operational risk, cyber risk and conduct risk to name but a few; as well as the tax implications on alternative investments. An overview was given on the impact of the proposed Conduct of Financial Institutions Bill and what this would entail for financial institutions. New stock exchanges were discussed on a panel which comprised of Etienne Nel (CEO of ZARX), Kevin Brady (CEO of A2X) and Leanne Parsons (Director: Information services of the JSE). An update of the aftermath of T + 3 and the possibility of T + 1 as a future prospect at the JSE was given.
The audience participation was outstanding and numerous significant connections made. Thank you to the speakers and everyone who attended this event for making it such a worthwhile experience.
